Evergreen Heritage Summer Review 2019

Evergreen Cemetery Welcome Center Opening

The long-anticipated opening of the Evergreen Cemetery Welcome Center was in early July.  The Center has been open two days each week since then, and has accommodated many visitors interested in gravesite locations or facts and history of the cemetery.  Due to the changing seasons, we will wind down the operation but will continue to use the building during the winter months also, to complete smaller restoration projects that could not reasonably be worked on during the hotter months.

Historic Preservation Alliance Tour (Almost)

EH organized and prepared for a presentation at Fairview Cemetery on August 1st.  The tour was for the Colorado Springs Historic Preservation Alliance for about thirty attendees.  The tour was to provide information to the group on the history of the cemetery, and a live demonstration of a headstone restoration in progress.  Alas, the tour was cancelled at the last minute due to extremely severe weather in the area.

Largest Walking Tour Attendance Ever!

Our biggest event of the year, the 19th Annual Walking Tour, was held September 14 at Evergreen.  It drew the largest audience ever, a total of 263 visitors from around the area.  Comments from the visitors were very
positive, with much interest in additional tours during the year.  Not only did everyone seem to have a good time, we brought in over $2,200.  Those funds will fund training classes and restoration projects at Evergreen and Fairview, as no other group is currently supporting Fairview Cemetery located on south 26th Street.

Local Group Revives Planters

EH  sponsored a local group of about eight adults from MK Legacy which supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.   The group adopted about ten planters around Evergreen and worked together to plant well over 100 plants, some of which were donated and some that were provided by EH.

Heritage Rose Project Flourishes

Progress continues on the heritage rose revival project.  At last count, there were about 250 roses identified throughout Evergreen.  Close to 75 local volunteers have stepped up to adopt and care for their chosen roses.  Dianne and I recently visited a cemetery in Denver to view what they bill as their rose garden, but which contains only about 30 plants.

If you are interested in volunteer for the rose project, please join the list by clicking the link below the picture.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS

And finally, there was another incident of vandalism at Evergreen.  On September 27th or 28th, windows were broken out at both the chapel, the old restrooms which aren't in use and the Welcome Center.  The chapel sustained no other damage or loss, but the individual(s) were able to enter the Welcome Center through a window next to the front door, apparently sustaining some lacerations.  There was a relatively minor loss of some equipment and tools.  The police were notified and investigated the scene.  We may need to look again at security measures for both buildings, especially exterior lighting.

Cleaning Headstones At Fairview Cemetery

We are all sickened at the recent vandalism at Fairview Cemetery. The newer stones, although a heartbreak to the family can easily be cleaned with proper techniques by a monument company. The older, softer headstones may prove a different story as the paint will permeate the stone, and the paint may never be completely removed. We all have a need to make this right but please understand private individuals should not go out on their own and do any work in the cemetery without contacting the cemetery office.

The headstones and monuments at both Evergreen and Fairview Cemeteries are the property of the family. Please do not clean or repair any headstones without the permission of the family,  Evergreen Cemetery or Evergreen Heritage.

Conservators working with Evergreen Heritage are trained in proper cleaning and repair methods. If you attempt to clean or repair a headstone without permission, you may be held liable for any damage caused to the headstone.

Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering to clean or if you would like to know the proper  techniques to clean your family headstones

Bring History To Life at Evergreen Cemetery

For almost 20 years residents at Evergreen Cemetery come to life for our Annual Walking Tour. We are recruiting volunteers to join and expand our "cast of characters" for 2019.

VOLUNTEER HISTORIC

CHARACTERS AND TOUR GUIDES 2019

Evergreen Heritage Supports Restoration Projects at Evergreen and Fairview Cemeteries
If you have ever toiled with the idea of joining Evergreen Heritage and bringing to life one of the historic characters who now lay at rest in Evergreen Cemetery, you will be excited to know of the new project we are offering this summer.

This January, Evergreen Heritage will start recruiting volunteers to join our current cast of historic residents.  You too can learn to bring to life residents from Evergreen and Fairview Cemeteries. Your participation will allow us to create additional historic tours in addition to our Annual walking tour. With your help, we can keep our amazing history alive.

Those who are interested will submit their choice of historic person to our committee. Each applicant will conduct their own research and develop a 10-minute presentation. We will assist with research suggestions and costuming to help you create the most authentic portrayal as possible. For those who truly wish to dig deep into research, a class will be offered at a minimal cost to help guide you through the process and teach you the process of the actual performance.

In late spring, you will present your character to the committee. The committee will give you feedback so that you are ready to present for any tours that occur from late spring into early summer.

We look forward to working with you as you help others to remember our history. It is you who will bring history to life at Evergreen Cemetery and honor those who help us make us who we are.

TOUR GUIDE DOCENTS

If being a performer is not for you, but you still wish to volunteer, we will also be recruiting for Tour Guides.  You will offer guided group tours through Evergreen Cemetery, and possibly Fairview Cemetery. Evergreen Heritage will provide you with an overall history of the cemetery and will create a tour route. We will also provide information on historic residents and monuments.

Guide docents will share this knowledge of Evergreen Cemetery to our summer visitors. We will be promoting these private tours during the summer and hope you will assist us in volunteering as a tour guide.

Please submit your choice of historic character no later than March 15th.

Looking forward to this new program for 2019!

Thank you
Dianne Hartshorn, Director
